Connecting with horses can be as simple as relaxing out in a field, building your bond while they enjoy a nice meal!

Before my internship at Mane Source Counseling, I was really just tossed in the mix and I wasn’t sure if I was really helping people or how to help people. Yet after I completed my second-year internship at Mane Source Counseling my views have changed. I couldn’t be happier with the experience I gained. Cheryl is an excellent mentor and supervisor. She actually would include you in counseling sessions from intake sessions to running group sessions.

Mane Source Counseling is a bit different because she integrates equine-assisted therapy for some clients. Equine-assisted therapy consists of grooming horses, walking, and some riding for more advanced clients. Before my internship, I personally had never been around horses. I’m sure as a child I rode a pony at a local fair but nothing more than that. To be honest I was even a little nervous working with them for therapy.

But, the more you are willing to be open and honest the more you can learn and feel comfortable. The horses are lovely and sweet. It’s amazing to see them work and how they help build confidence in clients.

Most of the clients that work with the horses need assistance with speaking up, confidence, and consent. The great thing is that horses give almost instant results, which most humans crave. It was nice seeing the clients develop their skills with the horses and translate that into their personal life.

During my time here, I’ve met incredible people in the field. I feel that this was the best site for me to improve my skills and gain experience. Although I plan on moving from North Carolina, I would love to stay at Mane Source Counseling.
